born in the same star sign as joey negros sunshine band project, the super phonics are all about invoking that classic soulful 70s disco sound, but to an updated house blueprint, with a little bit of soul and funkn thrown in for good measure. performed by a stirling group of live musicians, including session players for groove armada, incognito, us3, the james taylor quartet, the brand new heavies and the herbaliser, you know the tunes are gonna be good to go! first up is their cover of the linda williams classic elevate our minds - a timeless soul number that has graced the decks of many a southport weekender as well as being recently sampled on ben westbeechs drum and bass smoocher get closer. the super phonics take it back to the raw, with this soul drenched cover. over on the flip, is the bands own composition have a good time, a jumping and pumping disco groover that should find favour on most open minded dancefloors.

every friday hugg & pepp sits down to have their mid day break after having a sturdy lunch at the partymakers. pepp is usually not late to suggest that something sweet should be consumed during this time in order to get inspiration and joy. hugg, who is also known for his sense of culinary experiences sometimes surprises pepp with exciting creations from all corners of the world. this particular friday, the team has choosen the mormors hosta, a typical swedish bread in wich a special yellow fudge, the hosta, can be found in the middle of this delicious bakery dedicated to our beloved grandmother. pepp, who is specially found of the hosta, also suggested that the two would make a tribute to grandfather so they wrapped the mormorshosta in a farfarskofta into a roll, then split it in half and feasted on this magnificent little piece in a cheerful mood. after this, filled up and satisfied they returned to their mystery machine and started to feed it with this new recepie. at first the machine returned some strange messages but after correcting the proportions between the amount of hosta and bread the machine successfully coughed up a banging bassline.

back in march 07, drag city issued rtxs second ball busting album, under a title that we all really loved and you did too. but the man! the man came down on them, telling drag city that in a court of law the album with that title would be struck down and that they must cease and rethink. thusly armed, drag city went to rtx and told them that a rebirth was at hand. fortunately, they were up for the change - and ratx is the inevitable result! containing the exact same contents as its former self, ratx has the additional benefit of being released in a super limited vinyl edition.

word we werent expecting this! this fine platter kicks off with a deft mash up of paris greys dont lead me and neurotic behaviour by psyche (carl craig) and then launches into a beefed up edit of derrick mays kaos. on the b-side is a re-edit of the kevin saunderson remix of we know it by the wee papa girl rappers. we dont know who did this and nor do we care. its a perfect party record for peak time dance floor lunacy. nothing innovative, nothing new but just adding a new twist to old classics and doing it with style. highly recommended

french artist based in paris. this prolific musician gets noticed by the od records label that has produced his 2nd ep in 2006 mixing in all his productions influences from the 80s, 90s and 2000s through cheap but stylish synth sounds, melodies that underlie a certain sense of tragic and his own gimmicks, he builds tracks socked in old school house, minimal and electropop that immerse us in a cold, sensitive and personal ambiance.

felix dickinson and toby tobias team up to great effect under the name of the mythical beasts on the newie from hector works. low slung funk bass and disco claps and synths make the original a sleazy discoid workout par excellence and as if that wasnt enough both q burns abstract message and nick chacona & anthony mansfield are on the mixes too. q burns mix is nothing to write home about in truth but chacona and chum do good things on their take, upping the tempo and aiming it squarely at the floor. hot!

joel mull, another representative of the swedish techno community, releases his current vision of what is to happen on the dancefloors. it is different from what his fans know from the early days. with his debut single on cocoon >harmonautic string<, joel mull sends us to a journey through the track which is smoothly airy-fairy and thus perfect to dive into the land of dreams after a wild party night. even when speeding up after a short break with the drums dominating – the track remains harmonic and is designed to dance into the sun in the early morning hours. the b-side appears spacy and melancholic, but again, mull is able to layer his music so deep and brillant that the basic mood is still vicious with the track still coming along in a magical and elegant way. >blossom< is exactly the right thing for a cold winter night and reminds of the b-side of beyers cocoon release

impressive debut ep from new duo bearweasel are a new production duo, consisting of dean muhsin and louisa page. with a remix already out on perc trax they debut with this superb ep for audioflys new label. opening track >monkier< is brilliant. combining a touch of latin percussion with swollen basslines and brilliant horn stabs scattered througout its one of my favourite tracks of recent months. second track >drummer< is just as good – its wonky techhouse with a funky bassline and small-but-effective breakdown. remix of >monkier< comes from my favourite hamburg-based croatian, solomun. his version takes it deeper, with a lazier attitude but a warm vibe. a quality debut and a duo to watch out for in 2008.

back with a bang for the next boka release is manchesters sno. one of the dubstep scenes heaviest warriors, this ep shows snos full range of styles. first up is >cant touch dis<, a track getting battered at every dubstep rave from london to nova scotia. on the flip is >urb<, a track on a future reggae flex. and last but not least is >fear<, a track thats so dark, its hard to listen to it all the way through with out feeling like youre going to be sick.

both tracks written and produced by chris liebing at studio one. (a1) supported by ali (deepdish)!! the a-side >bangpop< is at first obviously driven by a central bassdrum. little by little, it steps into the background and makes room for the fine and striking, hypnotic sequences. that sounds good already, but gets polished by a snaredrum that simply makes you happy. a little hit? we wouldn t be surprised. on the b-side we are facing >puckelbop<, a 12 minutes long monster. a good example for how efficiently a bassdrum and a sequence can clear an aisle into a forest. no tree will remain standing – theyll move! clr20
